  1. Punta Cana was only developed around 45 years ago. In 1969, the area consisted of completely undeveloped, impenetrable brush, stretching for five miles along the east coast of the Dom Rep.
  2. In 1969, investors bought the land and constructed the first resort. The name Punta Cana was actually the brand name for the group of investors. The group has now changed their name to ‘Puntacana’.
  3. So fun they named it twice, the Fun Fun Cave in Punta Cana has a 4.5 mile long river flowing through it. Travel through and check out the cave paintings on the walls.
  4. Punta Cana tourism brings in over a quarter of Dom Rep’s gross domestic product. On the Euro Monitor International’s 100 most visited places in the world, tiny Punta Cana holds spot number 66.
  5. There are no fewer than ten beaches in Punta Cana, all of which are beautiful. In fact, some of them are ranked as amongst the world’s best by the the European Blue Flag Organization and UNESCO.
  1. The unofficial national cocktail of the area is called Mama Juana. It’s made with rum, red white and honey bottled with tree bark and herb, and tastes similar to port wine.
  2. El Asopao, a delicious soup of rice, chicken, tomato, coriander, and sometimes seafood is a local hangover cure. Down the hatch!
  3. Punta Cana’s natural forest reserve is under the maintenance of Punta Cana Ecological Foundation, while its 14km stretch of coral reef is under protection to ensure that it is safe from human damage.
  4. Punta Cana is a golf lover’s paradise and was voted for two years in a row as the “Best Golf Destination of the Caribbean and Latin America” by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.
  5. The late Oscar de La Renta designed the Tortuga Bay Boutique Hotel in Punta Cana, while crooner Julio Iglesias has a home close to Club Med and often holds concerts in Punta Cana.
