Don't let the images of picture-perfect white sands, azure waters and swaying palms fool you - St Lucia isn't just a destination for beach lovers. Despite its diminutive size - it's just 14 miles wide and 27 miles long - there's more than enough on this Caribbean island to keep even the most active adventurer interested!
Avid explorers will love the island's mountainous terrain, with crags and coves to be discovered. There are even two vast volcanic plugs, the mighty Pitons, to climb - if you're brave enough to hike the Gros Piton you'll be rewarded with magnificent sea views from the peak. If you're not quite that fit, you'll be amazed to find that you can actually drive right into the base of the Soufriere volcano, for an up close look at a natural wonder from a different perspective.
While the hiking, biking and horse-riding tracks offer fantastic opportunities to get to know the island of St Lucia, venturing into the rainforest will give you a completely different perspective. You'll be plunged into a shady world full of exotic fauna, flora and wildlife, covered by a lush green canopy, with many different trails to tackle. You can even take to the trees on the exhilarating rainforest canopy zip-lining course!
Obviously, you don't come to St Lucia to ignore the beautiful warm waters of the Caribbean that are literally a stone's throw away. If you're a lively type the watersports will beckon - whether on the surface with windsurfing, waterskiing and sailing, below the surface with snorkelling, scuba diving, or up in the air with a parasailing adventure! If you do want to just get away from it all, lie back and relax though, there's no prettier place on Earth to do it than on a St Lucia beach!
Whether you choose a resort on the popular north-west coast of the island, or want to try a luxury bolthole on the west coast, there are some excursions that have to be on your 'do not miss' list. These include a trip to the Botanical Gardens, which boasts a magical rainbow waterfall, a day in the island's colourful capital Castries and a trip back in time at the Pigeon Island National Park, where you'll find many important historical monuments representing the island's interesting past. And don't forget to make the most of the traditional Creole cuisine that's on offer - the spicy stews are begging to be washed down with lots of lovely rum punch!
This Caribbean gem offers the dream combination of seductive soft sands and adventure. What are you waiting for?
Sunny St Lucia is best enjoyed during the Caribbean dry season between December and May. Between those months the temperatures get progressively hotter, with a hot May leading into the rainy season that runs from June to November. Temperatures rarely drop below 25 degrees here, with an average temperature of 30C - it's definitely not a place to skimp on the suncream!
If you choose to bag a bargain and risk a rainy season holiday, don't despair, the showers are often short and sweet and interspersed with sunshine! While June to November is also technically hurricane season, these are a rare occurrence and shouldn't put you off all that this glorious island has to offer.
